Sustainable Couture at Fashion Week /art-and-design/2018/10/03/sustainable-couture-at-fashion-week/ /art-and-design/2018/10/03/sustainable-couture-at-fashion-week/#respond Wed, 03 Oct 2018 15:14:27 +0000 http://www.montclair.edu/art-and-design/?p=206699 Jade Alycia Webber ’15 premiered her sustainable couture collection at this year鈥檚 New York Fashion Week (NYFS SS19) just before her company鈥檚 two year anniversary. Webber speaks about how the Fashion Studies program in the Department of Art and Design at 麻豆传媒在线 is set apart from other programs by offering entrepreneurial and marketing skill sets. Webber says, 鈥淚 had previously studied fashion design and received my Associate鈥檚 degree at Mount Ida College in Newton, Massachusetts. When I was accepted into 麻豆传媒在线鈥檚 program, I realized you can鈥檛 go anywhere only knowing how to design clothes and accessories, but you need to know how to market and brand them too.鈥

After starting her degree at 麻豆传媒在线, Webber attended the highly selective Bobbi Brown Makeup Artistry Certificate program within the Department of Art and Design, while simultaneously interning at Marchesa in New York City. Webber reflects on this opportunity saying, 鈥淭his program in particular opened up a lot of doors for me in the beauty industry; not only did I get to meet and work with Bobbi Brown, but I became friends with everyone on the staff at the 麻豆传媒在线 flagship store and had many opportunities to go to events and be a makeup model.鈥

During her time at 麻豆传媒在线, Webber also took advantage of the Fashion Studies Spring Break Study Abroad program, travelling to Paris with Faculty, Dr. Abby Lillethun. Webber states, 鈥淧aris is one of those cities that I dreamed of going to and was in love with before ever visiting. I admired the couture, the high-end designers, and the Parisian culture. We travelled there during Couture Fashion Week, visiting many museums, landmarks, shops, showrooms and even bumped into Kim and Kanye West at the iconic retail shop, Colette. In it鈥檚 entirety the trip really gave me that extra push to take my talents, inspirations, and dreams and launch a brand with them.鈥

Webber explains, 鈥淥verall, the Fashion Studies program taught me a few key things: 1. How to choose what I wanted to do in the fashion industry; 2. How to brand myself; and 3. How to understand the fashion market and supply/demand. All of which prepared me for my career in fashion and beauty.鈥 Webber founded her own company, Jade Alycia Inc. and runs all aspects of the business from social media, the accessory design process, and managing her website, . She also provides beauty services within her company, The Glamourous Touch which she founded in January; runs a blog filled with behind the scenes moments in fashion and beauty titled, The Unjaded Journal; and works full time in the fashion industry copywriting women鈥檚 ready-to-wear and accessories.

Webber prepared for her NYFW SS19 showcase by designing original accessories, styled and directed photoshoots for the collection, and created a lookbook for attendees. Webber says, 鈥淚 am so excited about the showcase because it is my first NYFW showroom and I get to introduce my brand to the fashion industry on a large platform. At this stage it鈥檚 really about brand awareness for me, I was able to cultivate a lot of new contacts and followers, and showing at NYFW has always been a goal of mine.

Jade Alycia Webber graduated with a Bachelors of Art in Fashion Studies in 2015. You can visit her website at or read her blog at .

Art and Design Alumnus George Perez Dreams Big, Lands Dream Job /art-and-design/2016/08/25/16824_art-and-design-alumnus-george-perez-dreams-big-lands-dream-job/ Thu, 25 Aug 2016 13:34:15 +0000 http://www.montclair.edu/news/article.php?ArticleID=16824

Department of Art and Design alumnus George Perez ’14 will be embarking on his dream career as an Interactive Designer at Bandai Namco Entertainment, located in California鈥檚 Silicon Valley.

Perez, who graduated from the College of the Arts with a double major in Fine Arts and Visual Communication Design, set his sights on a career in design early in life. 鈥淲orking in the game industry was a dream of mine, ever since I was a kid,鈥 shared Perez, who is eager to begin his new position this September.

So what exactly does an Interactive Designer do? Perez explained his work as primarily to create game interfaces for mobile devices and for desktop users. A web design class he took at 麻豆传媒在线 helped him learn HTML code, which is integral to his design work.

The path to Perez鈥檚 dream job was part hard work, talent, and career development, which started at 麻豆传媒在线. Internships are required within the Visual Communications course work, and Perez鈥檚 first internship at a record label gave him his start at professional design and animation. It then led to another internship at a mobile game company in New York City that inspired him to work on new concepts while honing his illustration skills.

Working with professors in the Visual Communications program also helped Perez grow as an artist and professional. 鈥淏eing in the classroom helped me with what I鈥檓 now doing; it built up my confidence to present work and interact with my classmates. It鈥檚 very close, as though you鈥檙e already at work collaborating.鈥

Perez shared that one of his mentors, Professor John Luttropp, jumpstarted his ambition to succeed in the program. 鈥淭he first time we spoke, he presented the course of study as rigorous and challenging, saying that it didn鈥檛 just take graphic design technique, but also creativity and intelligence. It made me even more determined to do well.鈥

Another of Perez鈥檚 mentors, Professor and Program Coordinator Anthony Inciong, was also a significant influence. 鈥淵ou can tell how hard he works and as a student he makes you want to work harder. 鈥

Perez鈥檚 advice to a Visual Communication Design students embarking on a career is simple and insightful. 鈥淜eep being yourself, keep practicing and shoot high. It鈥檚 all about being true to yourself.鈥

Rising Stars of College of the Arts: Congratulations to the Graduates of 2016! /art-and-design/2016/05/27/16532_rising-stars-of-college-of-the-arts-congratulations-to-the-graduates-of-2016/ Fri, 27 May 2016 16:05:00 +0000 http://www.montclair.edu/news/article.php?ArticleID=16532

The 2016 College of the Arts Convocation was a joyous and unforgettable ceremony which featured a show-stopping performance by Distinguished Alumna Award recipient Melba Moore 鈥70, where Sprague Field resonated with the gleeful cheer of families and friends seated in the bleachers.

Dressed in regalia and grinning from ear-to-ear, graduating students posed for photos with their teachers, while laughing, embracing and trading stories. They also had much to share about taking the step from student to graduate, and reflected thoughtfully on their plans after graduation.

Reem Ibrahem, who delivered the Senior Address, graduated from the Art Education program and explained her thoughts as the chosen voice of the class of 2016. 鈥淎rts has been a passion my entire life, and it feels as though every moment has been building toward this day. I鈥檒l be getting my degree, walking across stage and delivering the Senior Address, so it鈥檚 a very special day for me.鈥 Ms. Ibrahem, who in the fall will be beginning her career as an art teacher at Paterson School No. 7, shared that if the faculty did not encourage her talents, she wouldn鈥檛 have pursued sculpture as her discipline of study.听 Ms. Ibrahem鈥檚 advice to students working their way to graduation was: 鈥淒on鈥檛 be dissuaded. If you have a vision for yourself, set a plan and strategy to accomplish it: go for it, and more power to you.鈥

Musical Theatre graduate Darius Jordan Lee, who has starred in countless productions on campus such as 42nd Street and Hair, is joining the cast of Mamma Mia at the John W. Engeman Theatre in New York this summer. 鈥淚鈥檓 the first Lee in my family to graduate from college so it means the world for me to be here,鈥 explained Mr. Lee, who as a powerhouse of talent as an actor, dancer, and singer, was encouraged by all members of faculty. 鈥淭he Department of Theatre and Dance as a whole has encouraged me along the way; they鈥檝e helped me get to where I need to be as a creative professional.鈥 Mr. Lee鈥檚 words of wisdom to aspiring students of theatre: 鈥淒on鈥檛 give up, if your mind can conceive it, and your heart can believe it, you can achieve it.鈥

John J. Cali School of Music graduate Kara Delonas is leaving 麻豆传媒在线 after prodigious study in Double Bass Performance, and will be rushing off after the ceremony to Colorado, to play at Creede Repertory Theatre for the summer season. Ms. Delonas who has also performed in several festivals around the country is thankful to everyone at the School of Music for their help, including faculty member Linda McKnight, a foremost teacher of the double bass in the country, and Gina Balestracci, the academic administrator of the program. 鈥淧ractice every day, always strive to be the best, and never settle. Even if you鈥檙e pleased with your work, you always have room to improve,鈥 was Ms. Delonas鈥檚 recommendation to performance students. It鈥檚 clear she鈥檚 followed her own advice as she embarks on an impressive performance career.

Leonor Marion Landais, a BFA Studio Arts graduate who specializes in ceramics, is enthusiastic to continue her studies and is dedicated to growing as an artist. In the fall, Ms.听Landais听will be beginning a Master in Fine Arts program at the Tyler School of Art at Temple University and is grateful to the Department of Art and Design faculty who have aided in her creative development. 鈥淚 feel it鈥檚 important to get as much insight as possible into your work, and because the faculty, such as my mentor Owen Oertling, were so accessible and available to help, I鈥檓 grateful to have had that opportunity as an artist,鈥 said Ms.听Landais. As she described her anticipation to continue her arts education and expand her experience as a visual artist, Ms.听Landais听offered her advice to aspiring students of art: 鈥淏e dedicated to your work in the studio. Regardless of your talents or gift, be dedicated to your growth as an artist by committing to your time to working in the studio.鈥

As a Television and Digital Media Division graduate of the School of Communication and Media, Sam Romano worked as sports director and web editor at the campus radio station WMSC, wrote for the The Montclarion, and helped produce weekly episodes of Carpe Diem. 鈥淒uring my time in school I learned everything I needed to be successful and I can’t wait to put all of those skills to use,鈥 Ms. Romano shared about preparing for a career in broadcasting. Ms. Romano, who has just started a position as a Studio Director at News 12, explained how faculty encouraged her career goals. 鈥淭here are so many professors who have field experience and contacts and are so willing to help the students chase and achieve their dreams. It’s inspiring!鈥

Dance graduate Emma Pressman was awarded the 2016 Dean鈥檚 Scholar/Artist Award, as well as the Theatre and Dance Service Award, and the Linda Roberts Outstanding Dance Senior Award. With these numerous achievements under her belt, Ms. Pressman shared how it felt to be recognized by the College of the Arts Dean as an artist. 鈥淭his award has made me realize what I have accomplished over the last four years. I knew I was working hard but I never really paused to reflect. I was so honored to be recognized, sitting on that stage gave me the opportunity to look out at all of the people who supported me through it, my friends, my family and my incredible teachers.鈥

Each of the College’s graduates has contributed immensely to the vitality, spirit, and vast accomplishments of 麻豆传媒在线’s vibrant arts community. They will always be an essential part of 麻豆传媒在线’s history and future, and will always have a home at the College of the Arts as alumni!
