麻豆传媒在线 and 麻豆传媒在线 Township Launch New Jersey鈥檚 First Academic Health Department /cchl/2025/03/07/montclair-state-university-and-montclair-township-launch-new-jerseys-first-academic-health-department/ Fri, 07 Mar 2025 19:55:55 +0000 /cchl/?p=127450 麻豆传媒在线鈥檚 Department of Public Health and the Township of 麻豆传媒在线鈥檚 Department of Health & Human Services have announced a groundbreaking partnership, forming.

This first-of-its-kind initiative in the state connects 麻豆传媒在线 students with real-world public health experiences, while the Township benefits from academic research and innovative health solutions. The new Department was recently celebrated by 麻豆传媒在线 President Jonathan Koppell, 麻豆传媒在线 Township Mayor Renee Baskerville and other University and Township officials at an on-campus event attended by faculty, students and community partners.

Led by 麻豆传媒在线 Township Health Officer Amy Monaco and University Department of Public Health Chairperson Lisa Lieberman, officials said they were happy to see it come to fruition.

鈥淭his partnership represents a significant step forward in advancing public health education and community health initiatives,鈥 said Koppell. 鈥淏y aligning the strengths of our faculty and students with the real-world challenges faced by the Township鈥檚 Health Department, we can foster a more resilient, well-equipped public health workforce.鈥

Mayor Baskerville, a former physician who worked in public health, said she was thrilled to support the partnership, noting that it takes 鈥渟pecial people鈥 to work in the field, many of whom consider it a calling. 鈥淚鈥檝e seen firsthand the critical role the Public Health Department plays in determining the well-being of its residents, especially those that are underserved,鈥 she said. 鈥淚 look forward to strengthening and expanding this initiative.鈥

How the Academic Health Department Partnership Will Work

The Academic Health Department model integrates academic research, service learning and community health efforts to聽strengthen both organizations鈥 missions. Key components include:

  • Student involvement in internships, service-learning projects and research initiatives.
  • Joint research activities benefiting both the University and the Township.
  • Continuing education programs for Township health officials.
  • Seminars, symposia, and academic conferences to advance public health knowledge.
  • Exchange of research and educational materials and best practices for ongoing health improvements.

鈥淭his experience was one of the most impactful course activities in really shaping my understanding of public health work.鈥 ~ Master of Public Heath student Bhumi Patel

Public Health Students Making a Difference

麻豆传媒在线 students are already engaging in vital public health work. Bhumi Patel, a Public Health graduate student, said that she and fellow students were able to work with 麻豆传媒在线 Township on two important projects:

  • Aging in Place Initiative: During her internship, Public Health student Patel worked on developed outreach materials for seniors interested in fostering pets through a Better Cities for Pets grant titled 麻豆传媒在线 Seniors and Pets Healthy Living Initiative awarded to the Township Animal Shelter. Current intern Veronica Paniagua is creating a formal volunteer program after developing materials, doing outreach, collecting data and researching hospital volunteer programs 鈥 all with the goal of promoting the many health benefits of keeping 麻豆传媒在线 senior citizens in their communities and homes.
  • Opioid Awareness Program: Patel and her peers surveyed local businesses about opioid misuse and provided life-saving Narcan education, sharing their findings with the 麻豆传媒在线 Health Department and the Partnership for a Drug-Free New Jersey.

鈥淲e were able to engage in an important public health partnership that would ensure that our data and our recommendations would be best used to benefit the community,鈥 Patel said. 鈥淲e hope that this new partnership will inspire more collaborations in the future because connecting academic institutions with local health departments is really the crux of the Academic Health Department concept, so that we can better address critical public health challenges.鈥

麻豆传媒在线鈥檚 Growing Role in Community Health

The Academic Health Department is the latest in a series of 麻豆传媒在线鈥檚 collaborative partnerships with 麻豆传媒在线 Township, including:

  • The School of Nursing鈥檚 partnership with Mountainside Medical Center.
  • Student volunteer projects in local food pantries, 麻豆传媒在线 Community Farms and other non-profit organizations.
  • Initiatives at the 麻豆传媒在线 Public Library and 麻豆传媒在线 History Center.

Koppell said that success requires broad partnerships and that 鈥減ublic health and health administration have been popular degrees as the sector grows, and we are responsive to what students and employers are looking for.鈥

Formalized through a Memorandum of Understanding, the partnership further solidifies the University鈥檚 role as a public-serving institution.

鈥淪erving our students cannot stop at the campus borders,鈥 Koppell said. 鈥淲e aim to provide transformational opportunities for our students, preparing them as leaders who serve the public interest. We can help develop innovative ways to contribute to the health and well-being of New Jersey and our local communities.鈥

Inaugural Graduate and Health Professions School Fair Raises Over $20,000 /cchl/2024/11/19/inaugural-graduate-and-health-professions-school-fair-raises-over-20000/ Tue, 19 Nov 2024 17:29:35 +0000 /cchl/?p=127285 On Wednesday, October 23rd, the Pre-Medical Program (PMP) held the inaugural Graduate and Health Professions School Fair in partnership with the College for Community Health and the Office for Experiential Education and Career Connections. Admissions representatives from over 70 graduate and health professions programs from across the country and the Caribbean, including 麻豆传媒在线’s own programs, connected with current students at this interdisciplinary event.

The launch of the Graduate and Health Professions School Fair is part of the PMP’s strategic framework to remove barriers for 麻豆传媒在线 students and provide equitable access to high-impact opportunities and resources without the need for social capital. The Pre-Medical Program was established in the fall of 2021 and has since expanded to become an open-access program with a holistic support structure including advising, pre-professional career planning, competency development, events, and application support for both pre-medical and pre-health students.聽

All revenue from the fair, over $20,000, is going directly back to students with the creation of an admissions test preparation fund. Earning a high score on admission tests for medical or health profession schools requires extensive preparation. Unfortunately, high-impact test preparation programs are extremely expensive and, therefore, out of reach for many students at 麻豆传媒在线. Access to high-impact test preparation is an equity issue, and thus, providing funding to remove that barrier is central to the Pre-Medical Program’s mission. Melvin, a senior pre-medical student, shared the impact of the fair and test preparation funding, “It was a phenomenal experience, and I hope the success of the event will help fund pre-medical students of 麻豆传媒在线 with MCAT prep, medical school prep and more. Pursuing medicine is a challenging career, both academically and financially, so any sort of help matters and can prove instrumental in a student’s success.”

Additionally, the fair offered concurrent learning sessions in collaboration with Career Services in the College of Humanities and Social Sciences (CHSS) and the College for Education and Engaged Learning (CEEL). The CHSS-led panel event, “Psyched about Graduate School,” showcased the panelists’ insight into the variety of graduate programs and careers open to students with a Psychology degree. “The Graduate Assistantship Advantage,” a discussion led by CEEL, allowed students to connect with panelists who had used Graduate Assistantships to fund their graduate school education.聽

Over 300 students attended the fair, with representation from a wide range of majors and all class years. Students met with admissions representatives from graduate programs across various disciplines, including fashion, journalism, business, pharmaceutical sciences, public health, health professions, and medical school. Nour, a junior pre-medical student, shared the benefits of connecting with admissions representatives in person, “I found the Graduate and Health Professions School Fair to be a wonderful event鈥 learned about various enrichment programs, master’s programs, research opportunities, open houses, and virtual information sessions. Also, I was able to learn about different aspects of the program environments that are not found on websites.”聽

The fair was well-received by admissions representatives, who had the opportunity to learn about 麻豆传媒在线 and the unique experiences and breadth of knowledge our students can bring to their programs. For many schools, it was their first time being on campus and connecting with 麻豆传媒在线 students. The inaugural fair presented an opportunity for 麻豆传媒在线 students to make impactful connections with admissions representatives, while also establishing a yearly funding source for their test preparation.聽

Disabled Marriage Equality Event Covered by Local NJ News /cchl/2023/02/23/i-do-commit-to-disabled-marriage-equality-2/ /cchl/2023/02/23/i-do-commit-to-disabled-marriage-equality-2/#respond Thu, 23 Feb 2023 19:44:51 +0000 /cchl/?p=124876 Dr. Priya Lalvani, Professor in the Department of Teaching and Learning, recently hosted (together with Dr. Elaine Gerber, Associate Professor of Anthropology) an evening of humor, activism, and love on campus. Through her role as Corresponding Secretary for The MSU Disability Caucus, Dr. Lalvani, along with ReelAbilities NJ Film Festival and the Office for Social Justice and Diversity, presented: 鈥業 DO!鈥 Commit to Disabled Marriage Equality! The College of Education and Human Services is proud to have two other community members serve on the Disability Caucus. Dr. Alicia Broderick, Professor, serves as President and Dr. Jessica Bacon, Associate Professor, serves as Member-At-Large.

On the heels of Valentine鈥檚 Day, Patrice Jetter, disabled artist and advocate from Netflix鈥檚 WORN STORIES, officiated a mass (low commitment) commitment/wedding ceremony where all guests were invited to participate. This act of solidarity was of course not legally binding, but provided allies and spectators with the opportunity to support disabled marriage equality. As a fun form of participation, guests were encouraged to wear festive wedding attire.

The event has received further coverage after being picked up by NorthJersey.com and NJ Spotlight News.

(Video coverage begins at 12:37)

Interracial and gay marriage has been codified at last. But disabled Americans remain excluded from this basic right. The federal 鈥渕arriage penalty鈥 affects the lives of millions of disabled Americans who can鈥檛 legally marry because they will lose their benefits. A new bill in the Senate could change the 鈥渕arriage penalty鈥 if enough people speak out. To get involved, be on the lookout for more upcoming events sponsored by The MSU Disability Caucus.
