The Showcase will take听place听Thursday, August 9, 2018 at 5:30pm at听on the 麻豆传媒在线 campus.

The Young Writers Workshop Showcase is open to the public.

-Enter 麻豆传媒在线 campus through the main entrance located at 1 Normal Ave. Upper 麻豆传媒在线, NJ 07043
-Follow the drive around the bend to the Red Hawk Parking Deck (attached to Kasser Theater) located on the right-hand side.
-Exit the parking deck from the 5th floor, from which there is a pathway that takes you by Dickson Hall which is the first building on the path (a brick building on the right). Head toward the center of campus to get to the Student Center.
-Enter through the revolving doors at the top of the Student Center’s stairs. Once inside, turn right to enter Cafeteria B/C.

The names Elizabeth Eckford and Hazel Bryan Massery may not be well known, but the image of them from September 1957 surely is: a black high school girl, dressed in white, walking stoically in front of Little Rock Central High School, and a white girl standing directly behind her, face twisted in hate, screaming racial epithets. This famous photograph captures the full anguish of desegregation鈥攊n Little Rock and throughout the South鈥攁nd an epic moment in the civil rights movement.听 David Margolick鈥檚 book tells the remarkable story of two separate lives unexpectedly braided together.

Write an essay in which you make an argument for the possible meanings Elizabeth and Hazel:听 Two Women of Little Rock might have for today鈥檚 readers. Here are some questions that may be useful: 听What did you learn from reading this book?听 How might the book be helpful in talking about racism and discrimination?听 What does it mean to take a stand against social injustice? Your essay should also make specific references to passages in Elizabeth and Hazel听that support your conclusions.

Join writing consultants from 麻豆传媒在线鈥檚 Center for Writing Excellence at the Little Falls Public Library for a five-week writing workshop! All middle and high school writers welcome.

THIS WORKSHOP WILL

  • Help you build relationships with other writers
  • Provide you with in-depth feedback on your writing
  • Help you develop a complete draft
  • Offer you the chance to present your work at a public reading at 麻豆传媒在线

 

We will meet on Thursdays from July 9 to July 30, 2015 from 4:00-5:00 p.m. at the Little Falls Public Library. The final meeting on August 6 will be the public reading at 麻豆传媒在线.

The 麻豆传媒在线 Book of 2014-2015: Scarcity: Why Having Too Little Means So Much

Each year, a faculty advisory committee selects a book to be read by all incoming first-year students. For the 2014-15 academic year, the 麻豆传媒在线 Book Faculty Advisory Committee chose Scarcity, by Sendhil Mullainathan and Eldar Shafir.

About The Essay Contest

Please read the contest requirements and guidelines below:

Essay Prompt

Examine a problem or issue in your local, social, or global community that appeared to be caused by a lack of resources, what the authors of this year’s 麻豆传媒在线 Book have called “scarcity.” Is the root cause indeed scarcity or something else? Explain your analysis of the situation and your proposed solution, including the resources that could change the outcome. Your essay should also make specific references to passages in Scarcity that support your conclusions.

Requirement and Guidelines

This workshop is designed for students and applicants of the Teacher Education program who will be taking/retaking the impromptu writing exam.

Writing a timed essay under pressure can give even the best writers trouble. This workshop will provide you with tools that will help you write a successful impromptu essay. We will also practice impromptu writing with teacher education topics. 

This workshop will be offered on two dates:
Wednesday, November 5 at 2:30 pm in the Center for Writing Excellence Seminar Room: Bohn Hall room 494.
Monday, November 17 at 4:00 pm in the Center for Writing Excellence Seminar Room: Bohn Hall room 494.

麻豆传媒在线 Book Essay Contest Celebration April 23 /center-for-writing-excellence/2014/04/21/12807_montclair-book-essay-contest-celebration-april-23/ Mon, 21 Apr 2014 17:33:31 +0000 http://www.montclair.edu/news/article.php?ArticleID=12807 Join us on Wednesday, April 23 at 1:30pm in the Center for Writing Excellence (located in Sprague Library) for a celebration honoring the students who participated in the 麻豆传媒在线 Book Essay Contest 2013.听 The 麻豆传媒在线 Book Essay Contest asked undergraduate students to respond to a prompt that raised questions connected to听Luis Alberto Urrea’s The Devil’s Highway.

Light refreshments will be served. All are welcome.
