The Center for Writing Excellence is pleased to announce the winners for the 麻豆传媒在线 Book 2013 Essay Contest; congratulations go to Alexis Raven <\/span>Marrero<\/span>, <\/span>Khadijah Danielian, and <\/span><\/span><\/span>Gysel Espinoza<\/span><\/span>. The 麻豆传媒在线 Book Essay Contest was offered as part of the year-long activities surrounding 麻豆传媒在线 Book, a common reading program using Rebecca Skloot’s book, The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks, <\/em>as the selection for 2012. <\/em>The essay prompt asked undergraduate students to <\/span>discuss the most critical questions raised by the story of Henrietta Lacks and her family, her cells (which were taken without her knowledge or consent), and her enduring legacy, including race, bioethics, the politics of science, and a person\u2019s right to his or her own body. <\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

The CWE consultants faced a challenging task in choosing the winning submissions from the many provocative entries. Thirteen entries were received; three outstanding essays were chosen, representing various perspectives. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Alexis Raven <\/span>Marrero<\/span><\/span><\/strong>\u2019s essay, \u201c<\/span><\/span>At the Expense of Patients<\/span>\u201d was awarded the winning prize of $100. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Two runner-ups were selected and awarded $25 each:
<\/span><\/span>Khadijah Danielian<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/strong>, \u201c<\/span><\/span>Ownership of Oneself: Scientific Gain vs. Individual Rights<\/span><\/span>\u201d
<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span>Gysel Espinoza<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/strong>, \u201c<\/span><\/span>Medical Infringements<\/span><\/span>\u201d.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

A certificate for honorable mention will be given to essays that qualified for the final round. <\/span><\/span>

A certificate of recognition will be given to the other students who submitted their essays to the contest.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n
