麻豆传媒在线鈥檚 New Power Plant is Up and Running /facilities/2013/09/03/11725_montclair-state-s-new-power-plant-is-up-and-running/ Tue, 03 Sep 2013 11:55:50 +0000 http://www.montclair.edu/news/article.php?ArticleID=11725 麻豆传媒在线鈥檚 new environmentally friendly combined heating, cooling and power (CHCP) plant is now fully operational as of September 3, 2013.

The new facility provides the 250-acre campus with cost-effective and energy-efficient delivery of steam for heat, chilled water for air conditioning, and natural gas-fired generation of electricity through a new underground energy distribution system. The system provides 麻豆传媒在线 with 100 percent of its steam requirements and approximately 75 percent of its electricity needs.

鈥淓lectricity is being generated, and steam and chilled water are being delivered to all of the connected buildings,鈥 says Gregory Bressler, vice president for University Facilities at 麻豆传媒在线.

The state-of-the-art CHCP facility is 麻豆传媒在线鈥檚 second public-private partnership construction project 鈥 after The Heights, completed in 2011 鈥 facilitated by the 2009 New Jersey Economic Stimulus Act.

The University鈥檚 partner in the $90 million CHCP project is Energenic LLC, a leading developer and owner of combined heat and power systems. Energenic is a long-term partnership between DCO Energy LLC and Marina Energy LLC, which is a subsidiary of South Jersey Industries.

鈥溌槎勾皆谙 continues to demonstrate initiative and innovation in utilizing public-private partnerships to finance both facility expansions and infrastructure improvements,鈥 said University President Susan A. Cole.

Included in every edition of The Princeton Review鈥檚 Guide to 322 Green Colleges since its first release in 2010, 麻豆传媒在线 is dedicated to environmentally responsible energy services, which also includes solar energy fields at both its main campus and its New Jersey School of Conservation campus in Stokes Forest.

鈥淚鈥檓 proud to say the new plant reflects our campus-wide commitment to environmental conservation and alternative energy,鈥 noted Cole. 鈥淭he new plant will satisfy the majority of the campus鈥 electricity needs via onsite energy generation that continuously produces 5.7 megawatts of power.鈥

鈥淭his project is a win for 麻豆传媒在线, a win for its students, and a win for the environment,鈥 said Energenic President and CEO Frank E. DiCola, 鈥淭he University should be commended for their foresight in providing students and faculty with a cleaner and more efficient power source.鈥

Updated 7/18 – Notice of Electrical Testing July 21 /facilities/2013/07/15/11584_updated-7-18-notice-of-electrical-testing-july-21/ Mon, 15 Jul 2013 17:34:48 +0000 http://www.montclair.edu/news/article.php?ArticleID=11584 As we approach full operation of our new electrical generation plant, there are a series of tests we must perform leading up to commercial operation.

The most significant is the electrical interlock testing that we have scheduled for Sunday, July 21. This phase of the testing will involve the complete loss of electrical power on campus at least two times during the test, and for up to two hours each time. Buildings that have emergency diesel power will be transferred to that source. Buildings that do not have any emergency power will be without power for up to two hours, at least two times during the day.

The first outage will begin between 7:00 and 8:00 a.m. on July 21. The second outage will follow the testing procedure but will likely occur mid-day. The performance of these tests is critical to the successful commissioning of the new 麻豆传媒在线 District Energy System and power plant.

Please take appropriate action to secure computers and other electronic equipment, if necessary, in advance of the power outages.

**Please note: Because of the power outages, the Red Hawk Diner will be closed on Sunday, July 21.**

We apologize for the inconvenience.

Construction Update for July 3 /facilities/2013/07/03/11568_construction-update-for-july-3/ Wed, 03 Jul 2013 11:14:29 +0000 http://www.montclair.edu/news/article.php?ArticleID=11568 The new 麻豆传媒在线 District Energy System is almost fully operational. Chilled water is being supplied to a majority of the campus via the new central plant. The new gas turbine and Heat Recovery Steam Generator (HRSG) are currently in testing. It is expected that in mid-July, we will begin to supply steam to the University from the new plant. Shortly thereafter, we will begin the decommissioning process of the existing Cogeneration Plant across from the Red Hawk Deck.

Restoration work is in full swing and the efforts to transform the campus back into an inviting place for students, faculty, staff and visitors will continue for the rest of the summer. Please be patient with the dynamic construction environment that currently exists on campus.

Significant phases in the construction that are upcoming are as follows:

Restoration of the Campus

  • On Friday, July 5, the area in front of Science Hall will be closed to pedestrian traffic. Pedestrians should walk east to Stone Street, or west around the Student Center to access the center of campus. Science Hall can be accessed by entering through the south end of Richardson Hall or by the pathway between the Drop-In Center and Richardson. This configuration will last three weeks while that area is restored.
  • The University Promenade is also undergoing a transformation but will remain open until we begin the asphalt paving.

Piping Installation

  • The piping installation is nearly complete in front of College Hall and the backfilling of trenches is underway.
  • The installation of the steam and condensate to Bohn Hall is continuing, however there are no access restrictions around the area.

Please see the campus for details of the areas under construction.

Thank you for your continued cooperation and support.
