The Office of Fire Safety strongly advises everyone within the 鶹ý community to NEVER participate in the Fire Challenge. It is extremely dangerous and can be fatal.

The Fire Challenge is an activity in which flammable liquids are applied to the body and then set aflame, while a video is recorded as proof of the participant’s attempt.  Those participating in this activity may experience immediate second-degree burns and, in severe instances, third-degree burns resulting in permanent nerve damage and death.

On August 20, 2018, received second-degree burns covering 49 percent of her body in the Fire Challenge, which placed her in an intensive burn unit.

To ensure the safety of all who live and work on our campus, such activities in all academic, administrative, recreational, and residential buildings are strictly prohibited.

Please contact the Office of Fire Safety at 973-655-5401 for more information.

Campus Construction Information (Updated: 10-7-10) /facilities/2010/08/26/6047_campus-construction-information-updated-10-7-10/ Thu, 26 Aug 2010 19:42:51 +0000 http://www.montclair.edu/news/article.php?ArticleID=6047 We are providing the following information with the goal of making your travel to, from, and around campus a little easier. We’ve noted below the roads and areas that will be closed due to construction, and the best ways to get around the campus. We appreciate your patience and understanding during these campus improvement projects.

Please be advised of the following:

  • Most sidewalks on the south side of campus, around College Hall, Panzer Athletic Center, the Kasser Theater, the Red Hawk Deck, and Chapin Hall, have been paved and are available for use.
  • The area to the south of College Hall, bordered by Freeman, Chapin, and Russ Halls, will be fenced off and be unavailable for use.  Pedestrian directional signs are in place to direct you around this area while construction work continues. The fencing will remain in place until all of the remaining work is completed.
  • Conclusion of Construction in Lot 25.  Approximately 60 parking spaces have been returned to the parking inventory in this general use lot.  Permitted parkers (commuter students, full- and part-time faculty and staff members and adjuncts) may begin to use these spaces immediately.
  • Conclusion of Construction in Lot 7.  Approximately 30 parking spaces have been returned to the parking inventory in this restricted lot.  Permitted parkers (full-time faculty staff at all times; adjuncts and part-time employees after 3:30 pm) may begin to use these spaces immediately.
  • Conversion of General Lot 26 to Adjunct-Only Use. Effective Monday, October 11, Lot 26 (located south of CarParc Diem, and at the base of the recently constructed stairway connecting this region to the campus core) will become an adjunct-only lot.  Adjuncts will continue to have access to all general lots at all times, and to restricted (full-time faculty/staff) lots after 3:30 pm; however, Lot 26 will provide an additional parking option for this cohort.

New Residential Complex at the North End of Campus

Construction is on schedule with deliveries taking place throughout the day. Construction contractors will be parked only on the project site and in Parking Lot T2.

鶹ý Carpool Directory

The University’s Carpool Directory is available to 鶹ý faculty, staff, and students.  Login with your 鶹ý NetID to access a database where you can search for fellow University community members looking to share a ride.   You can customize your search for a specific day of the week and time of day.  You can also search by town and/or county, and extended into New York and Pennsylvania.  A video tutorial on how to use the Carpool Directory is available at

Carlisle Road Roadwork Update, 12/17 /facilities/2009/12/17/4782_carlisle-road-roadwork-update-12-17/ Thu, 17 Dec 2009 21:01:30 +0000 http://www.montclair.edu/news/article.php?ArticleID=4782 The ongoing roadwork on Carlisle Road and Red Hawk Way is nearing its completion with only a few more days of work scheduled. Those driving to the campus should be aware of the following and plan accordingly:

Friday, December 18 – Paving Carlisle Road (7 a.m. – 4 p.m.). A minimum of one lane will be kept open along Carlisle Road. A police officer will be stationed at each end of the construction and they will direct traffic in alternate directions in accordance with the construction activity and the traffic volumes that arrive from the north, south, and from Red Hawk Way.

Monday, December 21 – Striping Carlisle Road and Red Hawk Way (7 a.m. – 4 p.m.). A minimum of one lane will be kept open along Carlisle Road. A police officer will be stationed at each end of the construction and they will direct traffic in alternate directions in accordance with the construction activity and the traffic volumes that arrive from the north, south, and from Red Hawk Way.

Tuesday, December 22 – Signage will be installed at the intersection of Carlisle Road and Red Hawk Way so motorists should expect occasional minor interruptions to the traffic flow.

Once all roadwork is complete on Tuesday, the new traffic patterns on Carlisle Road and Red Hawk Way will be fully available to all motorists. Those entering the campus by Carlisle Road will be able to travel north through the intersection of Carlisle Road and Red Hawk Way and continue on to the north end of campus as is currently possible. They will also have the new option of turning right on to Red Hawk Way to gain access to the Red Hawk Parking Deck.

The traffic patterns for those who enter the campus from College Avenue will not change. There will still be access to the Red Hawk Parking Deck and both left and right hand turns onto Carlisle Road will be possible. Although the north end of campus can still be accessed though the College Avenue entrance, those traveling west on Normal Avenue may find the new Carlisle Road entrance to be the most direct route and are encouraged to use that entrance.

New Parking Deck Information /facilities/2009/11/25/4674_new-parking-deck-information/ Wed, 25 Nov 2009 20:43:14 +0000 http://www.montclair.edu/news/article.php?ArticleID=4674 You probably have observed the preliminary construction activity in Parking Lot 25 and the work on Carlisle Road.  These are the first stages of the construction of the new parking deck in lot 25, a lot that formerly accommodated 400 cars.  When the new deck is completed in 2010, it will accommodate 1,556 cars contributing significantly to the availability of parking on campus and the reduction of current traffic congestion.

To expedite the construction of this much-needed parking deck, 鶹ý’s facilities team has contracted with a company that will supply the components of the deck and construct the deck simultaneously.  These components—pre-cast concrete forms–will begin arriving on campus on Monday November 30.  The trucks bearing the forms will be escorted onto and through campus via a traffic pattern carefully designed by University facilities staff and police to minimize the unavoidable inconvenience to pedestrians and drivers on and off campus.  These deliveries will begin at 7 a.m. every business day and cease everyday at 4 p.m.   There will be no work on weekends or at night.

The arrival and travel of the trucks through the University will slow traffic at points during each day.  We therefore urge everyone to be mindful of these deliveries and schedule extra time to get to classes and other activities on campus. The final result of the work will be the long needed easing of parking for everyone.

Carlisle Road Closure and Roadwork Update for Tuesday, 11/24 /facilities/2009/11/23/4659_carlisle-road-closure-and-roadwork-update-for-tuesday-11-24/ Mon, 23 Nov 2009 17:10:32 +0000 http://www.montclair.edu/news/article.php?ArticleID=4659 Work will be continuing on Carlisle Road this week and those driving to the campus should be aware of the following:

Parking Lot 42 will continue to be closed throughout the week.

On Tuesday, November 24 from 7:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m., Carlisle Road will be closed from Red Hawk Way to Normal Avenue for milling and repaving. All traffic on Red Hawk Way will be directed to turn right onto Carlisle Road and those exiting the campus may do so at the Clove Road exit.

On Wednesday, November 25, two lanes of traffic will be maintained on Carlisle Road but motorists should expect intermittent minor delays as crews will be lane striping and installing signage.

Additionally, beginning Wednesday, November 25, minor delays should be expected throughout the campus as campus-wide pothole patching and repair work gets underway prior to the winter freeze-thaw cycle.
