Print Smart. Save the Planet.

At 鶹ý, every printed page has an impact — and together, we can make that impact smaller.

Between September 1 and October 31, our campus printed over 1.6 million pages, consuming the equivalent of 147 trees and producing 15,610 kilograms of CO₂ — enough energy to power a light bulb for nearly 1 million hours.

Let’s do our part to reduce waste while maintaining efficient and sustainable printing practices.

Eco-Friendly Printing Tips

  • Print only when necessary. Before hitting “Print,” ask yourself if digital sharing or cloud storage could be a better alternative.
  • Use duplex (double-sided) printing. Nearly half of all campus prints were duplex — let’s push that number even higher.
  • Choose grayscale over color. 79% of our pages were printed in black and white — a great start! Try to reserve color printing for essential materials.
  • Avoid single-use print jobs. Combine documents into a single print session to reduce warm-up energy and idle toner usage.
  • Recycle responsibly. Use paper recycling bins in labs and offices to ensure used paper is repurposed, not wasted.

Together, Small Changes Add Up

With 8,843 active users and 482 printers across campus, even small shifts in printing habits can lead to massive environmental savings. Whether you’re a student printing a paper or an instructor preparing class materials, being print-conscious helps conserve resources — one sheet at a time.

After the change, you may be prompted to accept a certificate for MSU-Secure. This can occur at any time, but most likely after changing networks or rebooting. You will see the following dialog boxes.

1. Authenticating to network “MSU-Secure”. Select continue.

Just Landed! The Phish Files have come to MSU /information-technology/2025/01/28/just-landed-the-phish-files-have-come-to-msu/ /information-technology/2025/01/28/just-landed-the-phish-files-have-come-to-msu/#respond Tue, 28 Jan 2025 16:29:25 +0000 /information-technology/?p=25195 Just Landed! The Phish Files have come to MSU.

To strengthen communication and enhance cybersecurity awareness across our campus community, the Information Security team is proud to introduce “The Phish Files,” a new, dynamic resource for identifying and combating phishing attacks.

The Phish Files serves as a central hub where students, faculty, and staff can access real examples of phishing attempts targeting members of our campus. By reviewing these phishing scams, users can stay informed about the latest tactics used by cybercriminals.

What’s Inside The Phish Files?

  • Current and Past Phishing Attempts: Real-world examples of phishing emails reported by campus members, complete with detailed breakdowns to help users recognize suspicious patterns.

  • Cybersecurity Articles: Informative content about best practices for online safety, insights into how phishing attacks are orchestrated, and updates on emerging threats.

  • Tips and Tricks: Practical advice for spotting phishing emails, protecting sensitive information, and safely navigating the digital landscape.

Why “The Phish Files” Matters

Phishing attacks are a growing threat to individuals and organizations worldwide. By creating The Phish Files, the Information Security team aims to empower the campus community with the knowledge needed to recognize and avoid these malicious schemes. This proactive approach helps safeguard not only personal information but also the university’s data and resources.

Get Involved

The Phish Files isn’t just a resource—it’s a community effort. If you receive a suspicious email, forward it to phishfiles@montclair.edu so our experienced team members can analyze it and add it to the archive. Sharing your experiences helps others stay one step ahead of cybercriminals.

The truth about cyber threats is out there, waiting to be uncovered. Stay informed, stay alert, and help us protect our campus. Don’t let cybercriminals abduct your data—explore the today and take control of your online safety!

Top 3 Recurring Issues

  • Do not scan the QR code with your camera app. Doing so will lock you out of the system. Instead, use the Google Authenticator App to scan the QR code.
  • Enter your code without spaces.
  • Do not delete the Google Authenticator App as it is necessary to access SSO applications.

On Tuesday, October 3, 2023, at 3 p.m., all students and alumni with an active NetID will have to use Multi-Factor Authentication to access applications that are enabled with SSO (Single Sign On).

Using Multi-Factor Authentication will enhance the security of your account credentials when accessing 鶹ý’s systems and better ensure that only properly authorized users are allowed access.

This includes systems you probably use quite frequently such as Nest, Canvas, and Workday. Here’s a full .

Please note: If you do not set up Multi-Factor Authentication on your mobile device, you will not be able to access these applications.

Follow the that will walk you through the necessary steps. The process is quite simple and should only take 2-3 minutes to complete.

Update Your Personal Zoom by November 6, 2022 /information-technology/2022/11/03/update-your-personal-zoom-by-november-6-2022/ /information-technology/2022/11/03/update-your-personal-zoom-by-november-6-2022/#respond Thu, 03 Nov 2022 14:31:32 +0000 http://www.montclair.edu/information-technology/?p=23029 Note: This memo is a courtesy reminder for anyone using the Zoom web conferencing software on their personally-owned computer, smartphone, or tablet.  All University-owned computers provided to faculty and staff that are maintained by the IT Division or the distributed technology groups in each college should already be at the latest versions of the Zoom client through automatic updates, so no action is required.

To continue using the Zoom client on your personally-owned devices, you must upgrade the software by November 6th.

In an effort to maintain product performance and improve the security of its platform, Zoom will be requiring all users to be on its latest Zoom Client beginning Saturday, November 6, 2022. This affects all Zoom Clients across any personal computers, smartphones, or tablets you may own. (see chart below)

For anyone using an older version, you will be forced to upgrade starting on Saturday, November 6th before you can open the Zoom client or enter a meeting. Please Note: While we encourage you to use the Zoom client, anyone using Zoom through a browser will not be affected. However, using the browser for Zoom does not have all the same security levels, features, and functions as the client.

What Do I Need to Do?

University-Owned and Managed Devices

Information Technology has been automatically distributing the latest Zoom client upgrade since Friday, October 27th.  We have proactively removed any older versions and installed the correct version. New Service Launched: Campus e911 Location Feature /information-technology/2022/11/03/new-service-launched-campus-e911-location-feature/ /information-technology/2022/11/03/new-service-launched-campus-e911-location-feature/#respond Thu, 03 Nov 2022 13:49:25 +0000 http://www.montclair.edu/information-technology/?p=23018 Enterprise Technology Services (ETS) has made many upgrades and changes to campus telephone services over the past few years. Our latest feature upgrade is one of great importance for our campus community: Enhanced 911 or ‘e911’ location services.

This e911 solution will also enable softphone users to update their location when using the softphone application on their university PC, whether working remotely or using the softphone while in the office. Please note that since the softphone is running on your PC and not a physical phone on your office desk, softphone users will be required to provide their current location when they start up the softphone application or whenever they change physical location. If you use the softphone application, please see the attached screenshots or read the complete documentation here for instructions on how to enter your current location into the softphone application.

The e911 solution relies on accurate location information for every user. As such, please remember that all telecommunications equipment moves must be completed by IT Telecom engineers so that location data can be updated and maintained properly. If you require a phone equipment move, please email itservicedesk@montclair.edu, attention Telecom, and do not move the equipment yourself.

Community members may still contact University Police at 973-655-5222 for any concerns or questions.
