Summer 2026 Interns for a Musical Theater Performance in an Italian UNESCO site (Agrigento) /inserra-chair/2026/05/08/summer-2026-interns-for-musical-performance-in-an-italian-unesco-site-agrigento/ /inserra-chair/2026/05/08/summer-2026-interns-for-musical-performance-in-an-italian-unesco-site-agrigento/#respond Fri, 08 May 2026 11:00:06 +0000 /inserra-chair/?p=221495

The selected students of the second edition of the Summer Internship in Performing Arts in Italy (The Valley of the Temples in Agrigento, a UNESCO site located in the region of Sicily) are two Musical Theatre students, Lorenzo Hilliard and Lizzie Caldon. For two months, they will rehearse for and perform in the enchanting show Il risveglio degli dei, an Italian musical about the timeless relevance of Greek myths in the life of humans, written and directed by Marco Savatteri. Presented on our campus for the first time in the English translation as a Public Reading in March 2026, The Reawakening of the Gods featured Lorenzo and Lizzie among the sixteen CART students of the cast. It also featured one of the 2025 interns, Mia Grizzuti, who will return to Agrigento, as an independent performer – with her BA in Musical Theatre in hand this time – after an unforgettable experience last year that she has called “truly transformative” (see news story). Another student from the cast, Madison Fair, will join outside of the internship program, driven by the enthusiasm this program has generated on campus!

LORENZO HILLIARD is a native New Yorker and rising sophomore Musical Theatre major at 麻豆传媒在线. His previous credits include roles in various student productions: Amos in Chicago, Don in A Chorus Line, Alf in Peter and the Starcatcher, Lockstock in Urinetown, Indio in West Side Story, Lewis in Pippin, Junior in Crazy For You, and Ernie in The Who’s Tommy. In the first English reading of The Reawakening of the Gods (Il Risveglio degli Dei) he played both Narciso and Apollo. Lorenzo commented: “I have Italian-American roots, and I consider it a special blessing that I will be performing in the same town where my ancestors once resided.”

To honor his origins, Lorenzo has studied Italian through middle and high school, and now plans to declare a minor in Italian at 麻豆传媒在线, starting in Fall 2026 with attending a class in the Italian Program (“Living in Translation”) that also counts as a SEEDS general education class. Lorenzo concluded: “I am beyond excited to further develop my performing skills in Italian in Italy for the summer!”

LIZZIE CALDON is a rising junior at 麻豆传媒在线 pursuing a BFA in Musical Theatre. Her roles in musical productions include Mrs. Bumbrake in Peter and the Starcatcher, Rose in Gypsy, and a swing/Guiteau understudy in听Assassins. Last summer she joined the Southeastern Summer Theatre Institute (SSTI), a highly-ranked musical theatre and technical theatre training program at the national level. She has recently performed in the English reading of The Reawakening of the Gods, which brought together both her classical and contemporary singing training, as she played Echo.

Lizzie stated: “I am ready to dive into a new culture and experience, and to continue my growth as a professional artist and curious student. I am dedicated to strengthening my Italian skills, and I look forward to applying them to my classical repertoire and academic studies in the fall (with a class on Italian Americans in Film) and beyond.”

Teresa Fiore (Inserra Chair in Italian and Italian American Studies), designer and coordinator of the internship in partnership with Marco Savatteri and with the support of Lori McCann (Cali School of Music) and Ryan Kasprzak (Musical Theatre) remarked: “This internship is the result of a collaboration across departments and national borders, and reminds us of the crucial role of international experiences for our students’ professional and cultural growth. It entails a full language immersion in a welcoming mid-size town where the students become ‘locals’ in a short period of time by enjoying the art and architecture (from Greek temples to Rationalist 1930s architecture), landscape (beaches and countryside), and gastronomy of the area.”

Dr. Fiore Presents About Her In-progress Documentary at Georgetown University in Florence /inserra-chair/2026/04/21/dr-fiore-presents-about-her-in-progress-documentary-at-georgetown-university-in-florence/ /inserra-chair/2026/04/21/dr-fiore-presents-about-her-in-progress-documentary-at-georgetown-university-in-florence/#respond Tue, 21 Apr 2026 06:46:20 +0000 /inserra-chair/?p=221352 On April 14, 2026, Dr. Teresa Fiore gave an invited talk at Georgetown University in Florence:

Linked to a class on Italian American film taught by the director Dr. Fulvio Orsitto that explores issues of the mixed cultural identity of Italian immigrants and descendants in the U.S., the talk allowed the students to explore how this identity was further complicated as Italian descendants were sent back to Italy as fighting soldiers and governing officers of the AMGOT (Allied Military Government Occupied Territories). Included in President Roosevelt’s strategy of turning the American forces from enemies to relatives, this approach proved to be successful as illustrated in the Pulitzer-Prize-winning novel A Bell for Adano by John Hersey (1944) and its film adaptation by Henry King (1945), which were at the core of Fiore’s talk for the attention they also pay to food availability during the war.

Villa Le balze class

The second part of the talk was an interactive session in which students were invited to look at Fiore’s gallery of video clips about food practices around the time of the Landing. The students’ comments and questions about the interviews with direct witnesses of the war opened up a debate about content and methodological issues, from the differences in food access depending on social class and geographical location to the tension between actual experience and recollection, as well as institutional historiographic reconstruction and propaganda about hunger and feeding.

The talk was part of Fiore’s current sabbatical project titled听鈥淢emories of the Landing,鈥听the in-progress documentary that she is working on in collaboration with Awen Films.

Villa Le Balze
Villa Le Balze Garden
‘s seat in Florence is Villa Le Balze in nearby Fiesole, a hilly town overlooking the city. It’s an early 20th century building enriched by beautiful gardens, all in the Renaissance revival style where students attend classes and take part in cultural and academic activities such as this talk.

Community-based Interview about the Int’l Project The Reawakening of the Gods /inserra-chair/2026/04/06/community-based-interview-about-the-intl-project-the-reawakening-of-the-gods/ /inserra-chair/2026/04/06/community-based-interview-about-the-intl-project-the-reawakening-of-the-gods/#respond Mon, 06 Apr 2026 09:15:22 +0000 /inserra-chair/?p=221245 The Italian musical The Reawakening of the Gods, presented as a Public Reading at 麻豆传媒在线 this past month, is at the core of a broader international intercollege initiative illustrated in the course of a March 20 interview on the radio program titled “Coffee with 麻豆传媒在线.鈥

Given the goal of this original radio program, which literally brings our students and equipment to the nearby community to connect with local listeners and boost MSU engagement off campus, WMSC chose an Italian spot, in Pompton, NJ. The interviewer, Allen Macaraeg, addressed questions to Prof. Teresa Fiore (Inserra Chair in Italian and Italian American Studies, Italian program, CHSS), Prof. Lori McCaan (Voice Program Cali School, CART) and our special guest from Agrigento, in the region of Sicily, composer and director , to explore the different aspects of this exciting multi-phase initiative.

wmsc-mic-2

In the course of a lively exchange with Allen, Fiore explained the history of the project, born from Savatteri鈥檚 first visit on campus in Nov. 2024, and unfolding through three workshops with our students, a two-month summer internship in Sicily for three Opera and Musical Theatre students in 2025, and the March 27, 2026 Public Reading bringing together members of the Savatteri company and MSU students. McCann, also on behalf of Prof. Ryan Kasprzak (Musical Theatre, CART) highlighted the importance of the internationalization of the curriculum for 麻豆传媒在线 students in the Performing Arts, especially those in Opera and Musical Theatre: Italian constitutes a key language for their training and career opportunities.

Savatteri commented on the ancient and yet incredibly contemporary content of a musical that carries the timeless lessons of classical mythology. Precisely because of this eternal quality, Savatteri was excited to bring the musical from the UNESCO World Heritage site The Valley of the Temples of Agrigento – where the show is presented in front of the 5th-century BC Tempio della Concordia – to the United States and have it speak English, thanks to the translation of the 2025 intern and Opera student, Brianna Coppolino. Her precise and poetic version was completed under the supervision of Prof. Trubiano (Italian program) and encapsulates the type of translation of knowledge, talent, experience, languages and cultures that the overall initiative activates in three departments (Musical Theatre, Voice at the Cali School of Music, and Italian), two colleges (CART and CHSS), two kind of entities (public university and private company ) and effectively locations in two continents, 麻豆传媒在线 (USA) and Agrigento (Italy).

Blending excerpts from audiovisual archival material, literary sources, and original video-interviews with direct witnesses of the 1943 Allied Landing in Sicily, the presentation read a largely forgotten pivotal historical event of WWII through the lens of foodways. In Fiore’s approach, as a memory and narrative device, food allows for an alternate history of the liberation campaign through complicating both the myth of the Land of Abundance incarnated by the U.S. military forces and the image of a destitute Sicily that the Americans embraced.

Included in the Jerre Mangione Lecture Series and sponsored by the Center for Italian Studies, the lecture fostered a lively debate among graduate students and faculty alike with a mix of touching family recollections, intellectual curiosity towards the subject, and careful inquiry about the research methodology.

Video installation by Maria D. Rapicavoli (in Italian with English subtitles)
Curator: Teresa Fiore

City Hall of Agrigento, Piazza Pirandello, 1 鈥 Multimedia room (inside the atrium on the right)
December 1-31, 2025 Hours: Mon-Fri 10am-6pm Saturday 10am-1pm
Info:

Guided tour: Sunday Dec. 28 at 5:30pm in the courtyard of City Hall, Agrigento. The main actress, Lucia Cammalleri, originally from Canicatt矛 (Agrigento) will be in attendance. A light thematic tasting will be prepared by the pastry baker Federica Farruggia (Casa Barbadoro). We will write postcards to the artist currently in New York City.

Through an experimental narrative, the film tells the journey to the United States of the protagonist, a Sicilian woman forced to emigrate to the USA with an imposed arranged marriage, leaving behind a partner and her children. As such, the woman becomes 鈥渙ther鈥 both with respect to the world she comes from and that of Lawrence, Massachusetts, in which she finds herself living after crossing the ocean. The theme of the video is highly relevant to the Agrigento 2025 dossier, entitled 鈥淭he Self, the Other and Nature: Cultural Relations and Transformations鈥 and places emphasis on the gender issue, in a province characterized by strong emigration, including female emigration, both in the past and today.

This work by Maria Rapicavoli is inspired by the words of Simone de Beauvoir in the 1949 essay “La donna like other:” its opening to the public takes place only one week after the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women on November 25, established by the United Nations General Assembly in 1999.

The other: A familiar story is an installation included in the SPONDE project, within Agrigento Capital of Culture 2025, with the support of the Ministry of Culture, the Agrigento Capitale Foundation, the Sicilian Region, the Municipality of Agrigento, and the Inserra Chair in Italian and Italian American Studies at 麻豆传媒在线.

Organized by the local museum Nunzio Bruno, devoted to traditional craftsmanship, whose mission is to engage the town’s residents as part of collaborations with several associations, the talk included a presentation by Giuseppe Caramma, a historian affiliated with the University of Catania, and Daniele Valvo, an engineer-turned-WWII-guide whose approach with the audience is interactive. Particularly effective was Valvo’s guessing game about vintage photos of the Allied soldiers’ arrival to Sicily, where the participants had to identify locations and people depicted in the images.

Floridia hall audience

Dr. Fiore shared information about the condition of Italian Americans at the time of Pearl Harbor and described their paradoxical experience of being at once “enemy aliens” in 1942 and supporters of the military efforts with the drafting of large numbers of soldiers of Italian descent, while also being concerned about the fate of their relatives back in the country of origin, since Italy was an enemy up to the Landing. Dr. Fiore also illustrated how the 82nd anniversary of the Landing was celebrated in Licata as part of the programs of Agrigento Capital of Culture 2025. Since the main topic of the evening was indeed the cultural value of the memory of the Landing as part of public history projects, she provided a model that embraces a multi-disciplinary approach in line with the mission of and its Italian chapter, (see SBARCO).

Dr. Fiore Presents Her Sabbatical Project at UNISG in Piedmont, Italy /inserra-chair/2025/10/16/dr-fiore-presents-her-sabbatical-project-at-unisg-in-piedmont-italy/ /inserra-chair/2025/10/16/dr-fiore-presents-her-sabbatical-project-at-unisg-in-piedmont-italy/#respond Thu, 16 Oct 2025 21:59:14 +0000 /inserra-chair/?p=220327 Dr. Teresa Fiore gave a talk titled “The Taste of the Landing; Food and the American Myth at the Time of Operation Husky” at UNISG (Universit脿 delle Scienze Gastronomiche) in Pollenzo (Piedmont, Italy) on Oct. 14.

Based on her sabbatical research on foodways at the time of the Allied Landing in Sicily (1943), the paper revises the narrative of the American forces feeding Sicilians through the use of eighteen interviews with direct witnesses and scholars sharing stories about the stark contrast between the local wartime food and the industrial food brought by the soldiers from the US. See webpage.

Prof. Cinotto introduced Dr. Fiore’s talk providing special insights into the impact of the landing in Italy in terms of U.S. control of the economic and socio-political sphere.听The students鈥 questions during the Q&A revealed a keen interest in historical issues, in methodological aspects linked to oral history, and in the encounter of cultures during wartime.

UNISG has an institutional commitment to videos about food. Its film archive directed by Dr. Gabriele Proglio, is devoted to oral history about food, food history, food practices, etc.

UNISG is a private university linked to Slow Food, the movement founded by Carlo Petrini in 1986. Focused on food and sustainability, the academic approach privileges collaborative hands-on projects ranging from cooking, cook-book writing, market visits, food history research, eco-agronomy techniques, etc.

The UNISG campus is a World-Heritage (UNESCO) site with its distinctive historical buildings, imposing towers, elegant courtyards, printing office for student-managed publications, student-tended fruit and vegetable gardens, and a unique cafeteria that largely relies on the produce cultivated on campus. All under the watchful eye of the snail, the Slow Food symbol, under no time pressure.
