Inserito nel dossier di Agrigento Capitale della Cultura 2025, SPONDE<\/a> \u00e8 una rete di progetti interdisciplinari e multimediali che esplora i luoghi di contatto tra acqua e terra: coste da cui chi migra parte o arriva, punti di sbarco delle truppe militari, o spazi naturali in continuo divenire. Coordinato dalla Prof.ssa Teresa Fiore<\/strong>, docente universitaria negli USA di origini agrigentine, nonch\u00e9 membro della delegazione che ha illustrato e vinto la candidatura di Agrigento a Capitale della Cultura a Roma nel 2023<\/strong><\/a>, SPONDE fa capo ad un collettivo di artisti\/e e studiosi\/e creato ad hoc per AG25. Si tratta di figure italiane trasferitesi negli USA (le artiste Maria Rapicavoli e Marina Sagona, il regista Valerio Ciriaci, la produttrice Mila Tenaglia<\/strong>) o di figure che per discendenza familiare (il direttore della fotografia Isaak Liptzin<\/strong>) o interessi di studio (il Prof. Vetri Nathan<\/strong>) hanno scelto la cultura italiana come ambito professionale. Tutti\/e – attraverso varie forme di migrazione – vivono l’esperienza delle sponde, nella loro vita, cos\u00ec come nel loro lavoro.<\/p>\n

Acronimo di Sbarchi, Partenze, Odissee, Narrazioni, Documenti ed Ecologie<\/strong>, <\/em>SPONDE abbraccia tematiche che fanno da ponte tra l’Italia e gli USA e attivano sinergie creative e scientifiche tra i due paesi attraverso progetti incentrati su tematiche di rilievo storico (lo sbarco degli Alleati in Sicilia nel 1943<\/strong>), luoghi iconici (la Scala dei Turchi<\/strong>), questioni al momento discusse in Parlamento (la legge sulla cittadinanza per discendenti e immigrati<\/strong>) e tematiche attualissime per la loro drammatica dimensione (emigrazione dalla Sicilia e violenza contro le donne<\/strong>), declinate nelle realt\u00e0 specifiche del territorio e della storia di Agrigento. Tutti e quattro i progetti, inseriti nei 44 originari del dossier presentato al Ministero della Cultura, hanno abbracciato le questioni centrali della manifestazione riflessi nel titolo del dossier stesso: “Il s\u00e9, l’altro e la natura: Relazioni e trasformazioni culturali<\/strong><\/a>“.<\/p>\n

\"Sbarco<\/a>\"\"<\/a>\"\"<\/a>\"\"<\/a><\/a><\/p>\n

1.<\/strong> SBARCO: Evocando l\u2019Arrivo degli Alleati nel 1943 sulla spiaggia di Licata <\/a>(luglio 2025)
\nserata di presentazioni, letture, canti e assaggi ideata da Teresa Fiore con la proiezione di un mini-documentario prodotto da Awen Films (con attivit\u00e0 complementari: interviste a testimoni e un laboratorio<\/a>)<\/strong><\/p>\n

La sponda del mare di Licata (provincia di Agrigento) – prima citt\u00e0 liberata dal nazifascismo in Europa – come testimone di un evento storico di enorme portata – il vero inizio della fine della seconda guerra mondiale – eppure non sempre conosciuto, compreso, discusso. L’approccio multi-mediale dell’evento, intrecciando letteratura, gastronomia, musica, recitazione, interventi accademici, testimonianze, ha proposto un superamento dei confini disciplinari per esplorare il tema, rendendolo d’interesse agli esperti e accessibile al pubblico che ha partecipato numeroso. Nel dibattere un tema controverso come lo sbarco dal punto di vista militare e politico – Liberazione o invasione? Fine del regime o inizio di un’occupazione? Armistizio o resa incondizionata?\u00a0 – la serata ha portato l’attenzione sull’impatto dell’evento nelle vite della gente del luogo, indagando anche la sfera psico-emotiva, alimentare e creativa. E ha evidenziato l’altro grande paradosso, quello del “nemico” americano che arrivava nelle vesti del giovane soldato di origini italiane, figlio o nipote di un parente emigrato. Perch\u00e9 quella sponda dello Sbarco \u00e8 anche metafora della sponda dell’emigrazione siciliana, fenomeno antico e ancora fortemente contemporaneo.<\/p>\n

2. Le Eco-culture della Scala dei Turchi: Un sito di mappatura digitale <\/a>(luglio e dicembre 2025) LINK AL SITO ArcGIS<\/a><\/span><\/strong>
\nUn progetto open access su ArcGIS co-ideato e co-realizzato da Teresa Fiore e Vetri Nathan<\/strong><\/p>\n

La sponda che collega il mare cristallino di Realmonte (provincia di Agrigento) e quella stupefacente formazione marnosa bianca chiamata Scala dei Turchi rappresenta un contenitore di nozioni, esperienze, fenomeni che restano spesso invisibili e che questo progetto ha fatto emergere e raccolto. La sponda \u00e8 qui un sistema eco-culturale articolato dove diverse forme ed esperienze di vita convivono \u2013 animali, piante, umani, tecnologie, geologie \u2013 trasformando le sfide in esperimenti di vivibilit\u00e0, in un \u201cco-divenire\u201d, come formulato da Donna Haraway. Il sito di mappatura spessa creato per AG25 offre percorsi di visita alternativi nella zona pi\u00f9 ampia dell\u2019iconica Scala dei Turchi. Attraverso una lettura multispecie e multidisciplinare del luogo, attenta a botanica, biologia marina, geologia, gastronomia, cinema e letteratura, il sito invita a entrare in un mondo di storie umane e non, ben pi\u00f9 complesso della nota localit\u00e0 balneare, e a proteggere con cura e sapienza questo luogo tanto spettacolare quanto fragile.<\/p>\n

3. Diritto di sangue \u2014 Rovescio di sangue: Una mostra sulla legge della cittadinanza <\/a>(ottobre-novembre 2025)

Ogni legge sulla cittadinanza definisce il confine tra chi appartiene e chi \u00e8 escluso: la legge italiana, basata sul sangue, nella sua dimensione sia nazionale che diasporica produce forti contraddizioni interne privilegiando chi dalla sponda \u00e8 partito rispetto a chi alla sponda approda. Il Diritto di Sangue, o Ius Sanguinis, \u00e8 infatti la legge per cui chi ha un po\u2019 di sangue italiano nelle vene pu\u00f2 diventare un\/a cittadino\/a del nostro paese. Anche se non parla la lingua, se non ne conosce la cultura, se non \u00e8 mai stato\/a in Italia. Il Rovescio di Sangue \u00e8 l\u2019esatto contrario: \u00e8 il lavoro che deve fare chi quel sangue non ce l\u2019ha per diventare Italiano\/a, anche se parla la lingua, se conosce le regole del nostro paese, se ci vive da quando \u00e8 nato\/a. Questo progetto video racconta storie di migrazione di stranieri\/e verso l\u2019Italia e di discendenti italiani\/e all\u2019estero alla ricerca della cittadinanza italiana, mentre sullo sfondo illustra con 14 stampe l\u2019acquisizione della cittadinanza per naturalizzazione legata al lavoro, da parte di un\u2019italiana all\u2019estero, la stessa artista Marina Sagona.<\/p>\n

4. L\u2019altro\/a: Una storia familiare – Videoinstallazione su emigrazione e violenza contro le donne <\/a>(dicembre 2025)<\/strong>
\nVideo a due canali di Maria D. Rapicavoli (a cura di Teresa Fiore)<\/strong><\/p>\n

La sponda che costituisce una netta linea di separazione tra due vite \u00e8 il cuore del progetto di Maria D. Rapicavoli. La riva anche in questo caso rappresenta il punto di partenza del flusso migratorio, qui declinato in termini di frattura, scollatura definitiva, e poi soggiogamento. Attraverso una narrativa sperimentale, il film racconta il viaggio verso gli Stati Uniti della protagonista, una donna siciliana costretta a emigrare negli USA con un matrimonio combinato imposto, lasciandosi dietro i figli. Come tale, la donna diventa \u201caltro\u201d sia rispetto al mondo dal quale proviene che a quello di Lawrence, Massachusetts, nel quale si ritrova a vivere dopo la traversata. Il tema del video \u00e8 di forte pertinenza rispetto al dossier di Agrigento 2025, intitolato appunto \u201cIl s\u00e9, l\u2019altro e la natura: Relazioni e trasformazioni culturali\u201d e pone l\u2019accento sulla questione di genere, in una provincia caratterizzata da una forte emigrazione, anche femminile, tanto in passato quanto oggi.<\/p>\n

I progetti sono il risultato della co-sponsorizzazione di Agrigento Capitale della Cultura (Fondazione Agrigento 2025, Ministero Italiano della Cultura, Regione Siciliana<\/strong>) e di fondi universitari USA (麻豆传媒在线 <\/strong>e in parte UCLA, University of California Los Angeles<\/strong>). Nel corso della realizzazione, oltre a definire collaborazioni istituzionali nel capoluogo e in provincia con i Comuni di Agrigento, Licata e Realmonte<\/strong>, i progetti si sono poi aperti a sinergie con organizzazioni (Liberation Route Europe, Italia), associazioni (Caritas Diocesana di Agrigento), centri (Farm), enti (PTUA\/Polo Territoriale Universitario di Agrigento, Parco della Valle dei Templi), associazioni (Local Impact), attivit\u00e0 commerciali con spirito filantropico (La Madia, Bonaiuto) e solidale (Scaro Caf\u00e8) e hanno garantito il coinvolgimento di ricercatori, artisti, figure delle comunit\u00e0 immigrate <\/strong>(Gambia, Marocco, Senegal, Tunisia), alunni<\/strong> e docenti<\/strong> delle scuole locali, cos\u00ec come il sostegno a fornitori di servizi<\/strong> (tecnologia, ristorazione, accoglienza, comunicazione, grafica, artigianato) in un sistema che \u00e8 culturale, sociale ed economico nel contempo.<\/p>\n

Teresa Fiore \u00e8 una studiosa divisa tra Italia e Stati Uniti, che intreccia ricerca accademica, impegno culturale e visione transnazionale. Docente alla 麻豆传媒在线 nel New Jersey, ha insegnato anche ad Harvard, Yale e NYU. I suoi studi sulle migrazioni e sulle eredit\u00e0 coloniali italiane hanno ricevuto riconoscimenti da istituzioni come Fulbright, Rockefeller e NEH. Autrice del libro Spazi pre-occupati: <\/em>Una rimappatura delle migrazioni transnazionali e delle eredit\u00e0 coloniali italiane<\/em><\/a> (Mondadori, 2021), ha pubblicato in pi\u00f9 lingue su riviste, cataloghi e volumi\u00a0 , contribuendo a ridefinire i confini del pensiero migrante. <\/p><\/div><\/p><\/div> Dal 2000 si occupa di programmazione culturale multi-disciplinare (per le iniziative a 麻豆传媒在线, si veda: montclair.edu\/inserra-chair<\/a>, e in particolare la programmazione legata alla Sicilia<\/a>). \nMarina Sagona <\/strong>e\u0300 un\u2019artista italiana e americana. Nata a Roma nel 1967, vive a New York dal 1995. Ha studiato Storia dell\u2019Arte all\u2019Universita\u0300 La Sapienza e illustrazione all\u2019Istituto Europeo di Design. A Roma e\u0300 stata assistente dell\u2019artista postmoderno Mario Schifano e a New York ha cominciato la sua carriera come illustratrice per il New York Times e il New Yorker. La sua esperienza curatoriale include la mostra \u201cSenso Unico\u201d al MoMA PS1 nel 2008 e \u201cDante Ferretti: Design and Construction for the Cinema\u201d nel 2014. E\u0300 stata artist in residence alla Domus Artist Residency a Galatina (2019) e alla Chiquita Room Residency a Barcellona (2021). <\/div><\/p><\/div>Nel 2022 ha ricevuto una nomination per il Louis Comfort Tiffany Foundation Award. Ha partecipato al Whitney Independent Study Program nel 2012. Nel 2024 \u00e8 stata Artist Fellow presso l\u2019Istituto Svizzero di Roma. Awen Films<\/strong> e\u0300 una casa di produzione cinematografica con sede a New York specializzata nella realizzazione di documentari e progetti visivi che esplorano temi di storia sociale e culturale, con particolare attenzione alle interconnessioni tra Italia e Stati Uniti. Vetri Nathan<\/strong> e\u0300 Professore Associato presso il Dipartimento di Lingue Europee e Studi Transculturali dell’Universita\u0300 della California Los Angeles (UCLA). E\u0300 fondatore e ricercatore principale di un nuovo laboratorio di discipline umanistiche (The Multispecies Futures Lab<\/a>) – concepito come uno spazio interdisciplinare per studiare il benessere multispecie, le connessioni tra le identita\u0300 culturali e naturali e i legami tra i conflitti umani, il cambiamento climatico ed i danni ambientali. Nato a Mumbai, Vetri Nathan e\u0300 stato rappresentante indiano presso il prestigioso liceo internazionale Collegio del Mondo Unito dell\u2019Adriatico a Duino, Trieste. Successivamente, ha conseguito il dottorato di ricerca presso la Stanford University in California. Autore del libro Marvelous Bodies: Italy\u2019s New Migrant Cinema<\/em> (2017), ha anche pubblicato numerosi articoli sulle identita\u0300 diasporiche globali, la teoria postcoloniale, le scienze umanistiche ambientali. <\/a>PASSI FUTURI<\/h2>\n

Grazie a queste sinergie, hanno preso forma nuove opportunit\u00e0 per i quattro progetti il cui lascito \u00e8 gi\u00e0 individuabile in: nuovi inviti a presentazioni nelle scuole<\/strong> e in luoghi legati alle tematiche affrontate; sviluppo di interventi concreti per la definizione di percorsi strutturati sulla Seconda Guerra Mondiale<\/strong> in Sicilia, cos\u00ec come visite multidisciplinari alla Scala dei Turchi<\/strong>; articoli su giornali e interviste alla radio e televisione; e produzione di un documentario sulla memoria dello Sbarco in Sicilia<\/strong>, mentre si intravede la possibilit\u00e0 per le mostre di spostarsi a Palermo.<\/p>\n

SPONDE (SHORES)<\/h2>\n

Included in the dossier of Agrigento Capital of Culture 2025, SPONDE\u00a0<\/a>is a cluster of interdisciplinary and multimedia projects that explores the places of contact between water and land: coasts from which migrants depart or arrive, landing points of military troops, or continually evolving natural spaces. Coordinated by Prof. Teresa Fiore<\/strong>, university professor in the USA, originally from Agrigento, and also member of the delegation that in 2023 presented and then won the competition for Italy’s Capital Culture<\/a>.\u00a0 SPONDE is part of a collective of artists and scholars created specifically for AG25. These are Italian figures who moved to the USA (the artists Maria Rapicavoli<\/strong> and Marina Sagona<\/strong>, the director Valerio Ciriaci<\/strong>, the producer Mila Tenaglia<\/strong>) or figures who, due to family lineage (the director of photography Isaak Liptzin<\/strong>) or study interests (Prof. Vetri Nathan<\/strong>) have chosen Italian culture as a professional field. Everyone – through various forms of migration – lives the liminal experience of the shore, in their lives, as well as in their work.<\/p>\n

The acronym of Landings, Departures, Odysseys, Narrations, Documents and Ecologies (in Italian), SPONDE embraces issues that act as a bridge between Italy and the USA and activates creative and scientific synergies between the two countries through projects focused on issues of historical importance (the Landing of the Allies in Sicily in 1943<\/strong>), iconic places (the Scala dei Turchi<\/strong>), issues currently discussed in Parliament (the law on citizenship for descendants and immigrants<\/strong>) and very current issues for their dramatic dimension (emigration from Sicily and violence against women<\/strong>), expressed in the specific realities of the territory and history of Agrigento. All four projects, included in the original 44 projects of the dossier presented to the Ministry of Culture, embraced the central issues of the proposal for the 2025 event: “The Self, the Other, and Nature: Cultural Relations and Transformations.<\/a>“<\/p>\n

1.<\/strong> LANDING: Evoking the Arrival of the Allies in 1943 on the Beach of Licata<\/a>\u00a0(July 2025)<\/strong>
\nAn evening of presentations, readings, songs and tastings created by Teresa Fiore with the screening of a short documentary produced by Awen Films (with complementary activities:\u00a0interviews with direct witnesses and a workshop<\/a>)<\/p>\n

The beach of Licata (province of Agrigento) – the first city liberated from Nazi-fascism in Europe – as a witness to a historical event of great relevance – the true beginning of the end of the Second World War – yet often little known, understood, or discussed. The multi-media approach of the event, intertwining literature, gastronomy, music, acting, academic interventions, and testimonies, proposed overcoming disciplinary boundaries to explore the theme, making it of interest to experts and accessible to the public who participated in large numbers. When debating a controversial topic such as the landing from a military and political point of view – Liberation or invasion? End of the regime or start of an occupation? Armistice or unconditional surrender? – the evening brought attention to the impact of the event on the lives of the local people, also investigating the psycho-emotional, nutritional and creative dimension. And it highlighted the other great paradox, that of the American “enemy” who arrived in the guise of a young soldier of Italian origin, sons or grandsons of an relative emigrated to the US. Because that shore of the Landing is also a metaphor for the shore of Sicilian emigration, an old and still highly contemporary phenomenon.<\/p>\n

The shore that connects the crystalline sea of \u200b\u200bRealmonte (province of Agrigento) and that astonishing white marly formation called Scala dei Turchi represents a container of notions, experiences, phenomena that often remain invisible and which this project has brought out and collected. The shore is here an articulated eco-cultural system where different forms and experiences of life coexist – animals, plants, humans, technologies, geologies – transforming challenges into experiments in liveability, in a “co-becoming”, as formulated by Donna Haraway. The thick mapping site created for AG25 offers alternative visit routes in the wider area of \u200b\u200bthe iconic Scala dei Turchi. Through a multispecies and multidisciplinary reading of the place, attentive to botany, marine biology, geology, gastronomy, cinema and literature, the site invites you to enter a world of human and non-human stories, much more complex than the well-known seaside resort, and to also protect this place – spectacular and fragile at once – with care and wisdom.<\/p>\n

3.\u00a0<\/strong>Right of Blood \u2014 Wrong of Blood: An Exhibition on the Law of Citizenship<\/a>\u00a0(October-November 2025)

Any law on citizenship defines the boundary between who belongs and who is excluded: Italian law, based on blood, in its both national and diasporic dimension, produces strong internal contradictions by privileging those who departed from the Italian shore over those who arrive at that very shore. The Right of Blood, or Ius Sanguinis, is in fact the law according to which anyone with a little Italian blood in their veins can become a citizen of our country. Even if you don’t speak the language, if you don’t know the culture, if you have never been to Italy. The Wrong of Blood is the exact opposite: it is the work that those who don’t have that blood must do to become Italian, even if they speak the language, if they know the laws of our country, if they have lived there since they were born. This video project tells stories of migration of foreigners towards Italy and of Italian descendants abroad in search of Italian citizenship, while in the background it illustrates with 14 prints the acquisition of citizenship through naturalization linked to work, by an Italian abroad, the artist Marina Sagona herself.<\/p>\n

4. The Other: A Familiar Story \u2013 Video installation on emigration and violence against women<\/a>\u00a0(December 2025)

The shore that constitutes a clear line of separation between two lives is the heart of Maria D. Rapicavoli’s project. The shore in this case represents the starting point of the migratory flow, here expressed in terms of fracture, definitive separation, and then subjugation. Through an experimental narrative, the film recounts the journey to the United States of the protagonist, a Sicilian woman forced to emigrate to the USA with an imposed arranged marriage, leaving her children behind. As such, the woman becomes “other” both with respect to the world from which she comes and that of Lawrence, Massachusetts, in which she finds herself living after the crossing of the ocean. The theme of the video is highly relevant to the Agrigento 2025 mission, entitled “The self, the other and nature: Cultural relations and transformations” and places emphasis on the gender issue, in a province characterized by strong emigration, including female emigration, both in the past and today.<\/p>\n

The projects are the result of the co-sponsorship of Agrigento Capital of Culture (Agrigento 2025 Foundation, Italian Ministry of Culture, Sicilian Region<\/strong>) and US university funds (麻豆传媒在线 and partly UCLA, University of California Los Angeles<\/strong>). During the implementation, in addition to defining institutional collaborations in the capital and in the province with the Municipalities of Agrigento, Licata and Realmonte<\/strong>, the projects then opened up to synergies with organizations<\/strong> (Liberation Route Europe, Italy<\/strong>), associations<\/strong> (Caritas Diocesana di Agrigento), centers<\/strong> (Farm), institutions<\/strong> (PTUA\/Polo Territoriale Universitario di Agrigento, Parco della Valle dei Templi), associations<\/strong> (Local Impact), commercial activities<\/strong> with a philanthropic spirit (La Madia, Bonaiuto) and solidarity (Scaro Caf\u00e8) and have guaranteed the involvement of researchers, artists, individuals from the immigrant communities <\/strong>(Gambia, Morocco, Senegal, Tunisia), students and teachers<\/strong> of local schools, as well as support for service providers (technology, catering, hospitality, communication, graphics, craftsmanship<\/strong>) in a system that is cultural, social and economic at the same time.<\/p>\n

Teresa Fiore<\/strong> is a scholar shuttling between Italy and the United States: she intertwines academic research and cultural commitments within a transnational vision. A professor at 麻豆传媒在线 in New Jersey, she has also taught at Harvard, Yale and NYU. Her studies on migration from\/to Italy and the post\/colonial experience have received recognition from institutions such as Fulbright, Rockefeller and NEH. Author of the book\u00a0Pre-Occupied Spaces: Remapping Italy\u2019s Transnational Migrations and Colonial Legacies<\/a> (Fordham 2017\/Mondadori, 2021), she has published in multiple languages \u200b\u200bin magazines, catalogs and edited volumes, helping to redefine the boundaries of migrant thought. <\/p><\/div><\/p><\/div> Since 2000 she has been involved in multi-disciplinary cultural programming (for initiatives at 麻豆传媒在线, see: montclair.edu\/inserra-chair<\/a>, and in particular programming linked to Sicily<\/a>). Marina Sagona\u00a0<\/strong>(Rome, 1967) is an Italian-American multimedia artist. After her studies in Rome, she was an assistant to artist Mario Schifano. In 1995, she moved to New York, where she began working as a illustrator for\u00a0The<\/em>\u00a0New York Times<\/em>\u00a0and\u00a0The New Yorker<\/em>; directed the contemporary art department at FIAC (Foundation for Italian Art and Culture); and co-curated the exhibition Dante Ferretti: Design and Construction for the Cinema<\/em>\u00a0at MoMA (Museum of Modern Art) in 2014. <\/p><\/div><\/p><\/div> She was an artist in residence in Galatina (Domus, 2019) and Barcelona (Chiquita Room Gallery, 2021). Maria D. Rapicavoli<\/strong> was born in Catania and lives and works in New York. She obtained a Master’s degree in Art from Goldsmiths University in London (2005) and a degree from the Academy of Fine Arts in Catania (2001). She participated in the Whitney Independent Study Program in 2012. In 2024 she was an Artist Fellow at the Swiss Institute of Rome. In 2023\/24 she taught as an artist at the Children’s Museum of the Arts in New York. <\/p><\/div><\/p><\/div>\n

He is the founder and principal investigator of a new humanities lab (The Multispecies Futures Lab<\/a>) \u2013 conceived as an interdisciplinary space to study multispecies well-being, connections between cultural and natural identities, and links between human conflict, climate change and environmental damage. Born in Mumbai, Vetri Nathan was the Indian representative at the prestigious UWC Adriatic international high school in Duino, Trieste. Subsequently, he received his PhD from Stanford University in California. FUTURE STEPS<\/h2>\n

Thanks to these synergies, new opportunities have taken shape for the four projects whose legacy can already be identified in: new invitations to presentations in schools<\/strong> and places related to the topics addressed; development of concrete interventions for the definition of structured itineraries on the Second World War<\/strong> in Sicily, as well as multidisciplinary visits to the Scala dei Turchi<\/strong>; articles in newspapers and interviews on radio and television<\/strong>; and production of a documentary on the memory of the Landing in Sicily<\/strong>, while we discuss the possibility of moving the exhibitions to Palermo.<\/p>\n
