DON’T THROW AWAY THE KEY: CHANGING PERSPECTIVES ON JUVENILE LIFE WITHOUT PAROLE /justice-studies/2022/03/10/dont-throw-away-the-key-changing-perspectives-on-juvenile-life-without-parole/ /justice-studies/2022/03/10/dont-throw-away-the-key-changing-perspectives-on-juvenile-life-without-parole/#respond Thu, 10 Mar 2022 15:52:13 +0000 http://www.montclair.edu/justice-studies/?p=1015 Moderated by Dr. Tarika Daftary-Kapur (Justice Studies) & Dr. Tina Zottoli (Psychology)

April 13th 5-7pm
Dickson Hall, Room 177

Juvenile Life without Parole (LWOP) as an issue has been at the forefront of criminal justice reform starting with two Supreme Court cases in 2012 and 2016 that eliminated mandatory LWOP for juveniles. Following these rulings 23 states have passed legislation completely eliminating this sentence, and others are grappling with the process.

In this round-table discussion we will address issues surrounding lengthy sentences for youth, the research supporting opportunities for release, and advocacy movements to eliminate life and “virtual-life” sentences for young people.

Given their expertise in memory studies and transitional justice, a field that addresses post-conflict and post-authoritarian accountability and reconciliation issues, they provide a comparative perspective by drawing parallels between different global case studies, notably the Balkans and the Middle East and North Africa regions.
