DR. ARCHER researches contemporary art and design, with an emphasis in textile and garment histories. Her work has been published in various journals, edited collections, and catalogs, including: Criticism: A Quarterly Journal for Literature and the Arts; The Journal of Modern Craft; The Radical History Review; Surface Design Journal; Textile: The Journal of Cloth and Culture; Trap Door: Trans Cultural Production and the Politics of Visibility (published by the New Museum + MIT Press); Where are the Tiny Revolts? (published by the CCA Wattis Institute for Contemporary Arts + Sternberg Press); Women and Performance: A Journal of Feminist Theory. She is also currently completing a book-length manuscript, which considers how textiles are used to produce and maintain the limits of "legitimate" vs. "illegitimate" forms of state violence (in contract with Manchester University Press).
Her first curatorial project, co-curated with Jordana Moore Saggese (Univ of Maryland, College Park), opened in Feb 2026 at the David C. Driskell Center, and was entitled America Will Be! Supported by a generous Terra Foundation Grant, the exhibition displayed 25 artworks, objects, and documents spanning generations and U.S. regions. Featured artists included: Sanford Biggers, Deidrick Brackens, June Clark, Sonya Clark, June Edmonds, Mark Thomas Gibson, David Hammons, Gordon Parks, Faith Ringgold, Cauleen Smith, Hank Willis Thomas, and Nari Ward.
Dr. Archer is an Affiliated Faculty member of Âé¶¹´«Ã½ÔÚÏß's Gender, Sexuality, and Women's Studies program and the Vice President of Publications for the College Art Association. From 2020 - 2023, Dr. Archer also served as the Editor-in-Chief for CAA's Art Journal Open.
Prior to joining the faculty at Âé¶¹´«Ã½ÔÚÏß, Dr. Archer worked as an Assistant Professor and Department Chair at the San Francisco Art Institute’s History and Theory of Contemporary Art Department (2013-2018), and as a Resident Scholar in the Department of Gender and Women’s Studies’ Beatrice Bain Research Group at the University of California, Berkeley (2017-2018).
