Issues and initiatives around the environment, and what they mean for the businesses connected to it, have never been greater.

That’s why we’re proud to present the second annual .

It’s an important look at the people whose work most impacts the environment in the state, whether that entails clean energy, offshore wind, electric vehicles, water or a host of other issues.

To them, we say: Congratulations!

To everyone, we say: Save the planet.

Experts Weigh in on Current Job Market Trends /pseg-sustainability-institute/2020/12/04/experts-weigh-in-on-current-job-market-trends/ /pseg-sustainability-institute/2020/12/04/experts-weigh-in-on-current-job-market-trends/#respond Fri, 04 Dec 2020 19:36:56 +0000 http://www.montclair.edu/pseg-sustainability-institute/?p=1317 Given the change of course that has happened in the world, we wanted to provide expert opinions on what aspiring graduates can do to start off their careers in an uncertain economic climate. We wanted to know what skills will be more important, where the economy is doing relatively well, and if there will be any lasting effects on the job market.

Companies are looking for candidates that can handle the new responsibilities of the job market. Recent graduates actually have an advantage because they are comfortable using newer technologies and have been communicating virtually their whole lives. They can take what they’ve learned and apply it immediately.

Amy’s Thoughts

In your opinion, what are the biggest trends we’ll see in the job market given the pandemic?
Many positions are moving to remote work, resulting in reduced commuting, less dedicated office space per employee, slightly more flexible work schedules, more deliverable-based work, and broad cross-geographic teams working together from different home locations. We see other trends moving to more analytics and tech/electronic sector positions and fewer positions in the service and hospitality industries. This means that graduates may need to rethink their skill set and be ready to apply it to different sectors than they had initially anticipated. For Sustainability, this means more focus on data analysis and reporting in areas such as climate change, emissions, energy efficiency, renewable energy, waste, supply chain, and food security.
What technology do you think will become more important and prevalent in the field in the next 3-5 years?
Efforts are moving most expeditiously toward developing renewable energy and energy storage, more efficient and more environmentally friendly types of renewable energy, human-interface technologies related to this such as smart thermostats and smart meters, and developing access for all communities – energy justice and a Just Transition. The second is mapping using Geographic Information Systems (GIS) – smart technology integrated with global positioning and drones.
Will there be an increase or decrease in demand for graduates in this field in the next 5 years?
The Bureau of Labor Statistics predicted that jobs related to renewable energy – particularly solar energy and, to a slightly lesser extent, off-shore wind energy – would show the most significant increases in employment over the next decade. Some of these data, though, are based on the 2010 census. It will be interesting to see the new set of data coming out from the 2020 census. Regardless, the solar industry is increasing.

University Sees Record-Breaking Year in Grant Funding /pseg-sustainability-institute/2020/10/07/university-sees-record-breaking-year-in-grant-funding/ /pseg-sustainability-institute/2020/10/07/university-sees-record-breaking-year-in-grant-funding/#respond Wed, 07 Oct 2020 16:00:06 +0000 http://www.montclair.edu/pseg-sustainability-institute/?p=1239 鶹ý faculty, leading educational programs and research in multiple disciplines across the University attracted a record-breaking $22.4 million in external grant funding for fiscal year 2020, shattering the FY 2019 record of $17.9 million.

Researchers in fields as diverse as biochemistry, educational leadership, environmental science, social work, modern languages and psychology are investigating everything from STEM education for Hispanic students and their families to school security climate, neurotransmitter functionality, K-12 education inclusion for children with disabilities, enzyme inhibitors for memory loss – and so much more.

Funders include a growing and varied list of federal, state, local and private sponsors including the National Science Foundation, National Institutes of Health, U.S. Department of Education and National Institute of Justice.

Ted Russo, director of Research and Sponsored Programs, reports the dollar amount is also nearly double what the University attracted just eight years ago, in FY 2012. Grants have seen steady growth each year during the last decade, and the University is off to a strong start for FY 2021 with $6 million in new funding announced in just the first few months.

…coming after our R2 status, really solidifies our standing as a public research institution. These grants show that our University is headed in exactly the right direction, increasing its research endeavors and our funding portfolio. It’s great for our faculty – and for our students, who are getting lots of opportunities to participate in research.

Vice Provost for Research Scott Herness on the record-breaking year for grants

Included in the FY 2020 funding:

  • four-year, $2 million grant from the National Science Foundation, led by PSEG Institute for Sustainability Studies Director Amy Tuininga, to better engage Hispanic STEM students with hands-on, experiential learning opportunities – and extend these learning opportunities to their families and corporate and community partners. With Sociology Department Chair Yasemin Besen-Cassino, College of Science and Mathematics Dean Lora Billings, and Chemistry and Biochemistry Professor Nina Goodey as co-principal investigators. In addition, Assistant Vice President for Hispanic Serving Initiatives Katia Paz Goldfarb will participate as senior personnel.
  • three-year, $600,000 grant from the NSF, led by Chemistry and Biochemistry Professor Nina Goodey, to explore the effectiveness of teaming up STEM and non-STEM majors in project-based summer internships hosted by companies and organizations. The interdisciplinary leadership team includes Amy TuiningaԻ Elizabeth Emery, professor of Modern Languages and Literatures, as co-principal investigators.

Back to the Basics /pseg-sustainability-institute/2020/06/23/back-to-the-basics/ /pseg-sustainability-institute/2020/06/23/back-to-the-basics/#respond Tue, 23 Jun 2020 20:09:01 +0000 http://www.montclair.edu/pseg-sustainability-institute/?p=1140 Many of us have heard about the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)* but it can be challenging to fully absorb all of the information about them. The SDGs and targets will stimulate action over the next 10 years in areas of critical importance for humanity and our world: people, planet, prosperity, peace and partnership. With the goal of creating a more peaceful and prosperous world, they are urgent and essential for individuals and businesses to integrate into their daily activities if we are to meet our international environmental and social targets, and build back better.

Colombia’s Minister of Planning speaks at High Level Political Forum (HLPF) /pseg-sustainability-institute/2019/07/18/colombia-minister-of-planning-hlpf/ /pseg-sustainability-institute/2019/07/18/colombia-minister-of-planning-hlpf/#respond Thu, 18 Jul 2019 18:07:15 +0000 http://www.montclair.edu/pseg-sustainability-institute/?p=800 The 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development is a vision for people, planet, peace and prosperity to be achieved through partnership and solidarity. It is now in its fourth year of implementation. Over the past years, progress has been made with regard to a number of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and their targets. A number of actions have been undertaken by Governments and other stakeholders to respond to the 2030 Agenda more broadly. However, progress has been slow on many SDGs and the most vulnerable people and countries continue to suffer the most. The global response needs to become more ambitious. The HLPF takes stock of where we are in terms of SDG progress and identify challenges and gaps in SDG achievement.

Speakers bring various perspectives on the follow up and review of implementation of the 2030 Agenda and the SDGs. They indicate what they see as priorities for the political leadership and point to urgent multi-stakeholder action needed to accelerate progress. The discussions of the HLPF under the auspices of ECOSOC will contribute to the preparations of the HLPF under the auspices of the General Assembly – the SDG Summit to be convened in September 2019.

July 2019 /pseg-sustainability-institute/2019/07/16/july-2019/ /pseg-sustainability-institute/2019/07/16/july-2019/#respond Tue, 16 Jul 2019 20:15:19 +0000 http://www.montclair.edu/pseg-sustainability-institute/?p=787 The Sustainable Development Solutions Network (SDSN) and Bertelsmann Stiftung published the  including the SDG Index and Dashboards. The report details progress by countries on their achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). While not an official monitoring tool, the Sustainable Development Report is complementary to efforts conducted by National Statistical Offices and international organizations to collect and standardize indicators to monitor the SDGs.

Since its launch in 2016, the annual report has provided the most up-to-date data from official sources (including the World Bank, World Health Organization, and International Labor Organization) and non-official data sources (such as research centers and non-governmental organizations). The revised title reflects the inclusion, along with the index and dashboards, of recommended implementation strategies.
