[CRN 47370] This course traces the ways in which business, health, religious, and entertainment figures in the United States and Europe have capitalized on the ancient healing properties of public mineral springs to build private resorts and casinos that draw millions of visitors. | FREN 203-01: Mastering French
[CRN 40866] This course will help students practice French speaking, comprehension, reading, and writing skills learned in the intermediate level as we discover contemporary French-speaking civilization and culture in France and Senegal. The second half of the class will center on episodes of the French Netflix series Lupin and the Ars猫ne Lupin detective stories by Maurice Leblanc on which the series was based. This will allow us to take virtual visits to some of the places the characters travel. |

The course is designed to develop students鈥 writing and reading skills through texts that represent different genres of writing. The course will help students think more clearly and creatively about how to organize and present their thoughts, both syntactically and stylistically. It will also encourage them to adopt techniques of different genres of writing into their own. Taught in French. |

| FREN 350: Translation I [CRN 40925]
This class will involve the theory and practice of French-English and English-French translation in the following four disciplines:聽 journalism, politics, literature, and economics/business.聽 Our study will involve an examination of vocabulary, comparative sentence structure, grammar, and syntax, and how best to communicate ideas and imagery in both languages.聽 We will also begin our study of translation theory and how to apply it to specific translation problems, exploring such concepts as:聽 translation units; context; cognates; borrowing; calque; literal translation; degrees of freedom; translation loss; cultural issues; compensation; and genre. |

Students from our various language programs will study together in the first part of the course with Prof. Rodriguez as the instructor. The class will look at topics that pertain to all K-12 world language classrooms. In the second part of the course, students will study with a language specific instructor and see how the concepts explored in the first part of the course apply to their particular disciplines. At the end of the semester, all groups will reconnect and share final projects. |

| FREN 603-01: Research Seminar [CRN 46479]
Every student will learn to develop a research hypothesis and bibliography, better understand how to use library and electronic resources, evaluate primary and secondary sources, recognize and critique critical methodologies, cite sources, and improve French grammar and stylistics through careful editing and rewriting. These skills will be honed as each student develops a research project informed by individual interest. By the end of the class, each student will have produced a substantive essay formatted for further development as a conference paper and/or article. |
