Â鶹´«Ã½ÔÚÏß Community Farms

Â鶹´«Ã½ÔÚÏß Community Farms’ mission is to serve as a local, hands-on resource that engages and educates the community through urban farming, affordable food access and healthy living. At the heart of Â鶹´«Ã½ÔÚÏß Community Farms are its Coalition, partners and community volunteers. MCF’s vision is to be a vibrant educational hub for growing and sharing food with the community. MCF is educating and engaging the community through farm, food and health.

At the heart of MCF are its Coalition, several part-time staff, partners and dedicated volunteers. While some organizations have become more or less involved over the years, the core of the Coalition has remained relatively consistent and includes HOMECorp, Â鶹´«Ã½ÔÚÏß Health Department, Â鶹´«Ã½ÔÚÏß History Center(MHC), Â鶹´«Ã½ÔÚÏß (MSU), Rutgers Cooperative Extension of Essex County (Essex County 4-H and Master Gardeners), and Â鶹´«Ã½ÔÚÏß DIGS/Â鶹´«Ã½ÔÚÏß Fund for Education and Excellence (MFEE).

The MCF is comprised of two sites. The first is situated on a small plot of land nestled in a residential community in south Â鶹´«Ã½ÔÚÏß on Miller Street that is owned and donated by HomeCorp, and the second is a 6,000 square foot plot located behind the Â鶹´«Ã½ÔÚÏß History Center’s Clark House on Orange Road.

University Engagement Opportunities

The MCF provides a ready platform for engagement for Â鶹´«Ã½ÔÚÏß faculty and students who have teaching, learning and research interests in sustainability, health and nutrition ecology, urban planning, education, etc. This past year, Â鶹´«Ã½ÔÚÏß Professor Christopher Matthews, of the Center for Heritage and Archaeological Studies, led an archeological dig for his service-learning class at the Â鶹´«Ã½ÔÚÏß Historical Society’s community garden, while another graduate student used the future garden for an internship project.
